Detox and Outpatient Treatment Center in Columbia SC

Dr. Smith is specially certified to treat patients addicted to narcotics (or opiates) by prescribing the medicine Suboxone®, which allows patients to return much more quickly to a normal life without the painful effects of narcotic withdrawals and also without the social stigma and unfortunate side effects of methadone.  We strive for eventual abstinence, and are skilled in the use of the "opiate blocker" Naltrexone, as a shot, pill, or implant which will last 2-3 months!

Dr. Smith insists however, that his patients not rely too heavily on Suboxone alone, and requires his patients to do other "recovery work" in the way of private or group counseling such as our local Alpha Centers, community based programs such as AA or NA, or church based recovery programs.  "Suboxone helps get off the substance more comfortably, i.e. it prevents withdrawal.  Suboxone does NOT treat the underlying addiction process, i.e. it is not a long-term treatment to prevent relapse!" - Dr. Smith

We're also interested and equipped to help you or your family members battling any other type of addiction issue, such as alcohol, cocaine, or any other substance. "You'll find my entire staff sensitive and patient in these tough issues!" - Dr. Smith

Call Joan or Cherri at (803) 425-1330 to discuss your situation to see if Suboxone or Naltrexone therapy may be suitable for you.  If Joan or Cherri are not available, Kathy or Rachel are well versed and will help!!

All records of our "Addictions" patients are completely confidential, and Dr. Smith does not have to be your primary physician to see you for Addiction Medicine therapy. We handle payment for Suboxone treatment differently than our usual services, because, unfortunately, many insurance companies still do not cover addiction treatment.

We have a very extensive interview/history to be completed by all new patients. We can mail or fax the forms to you, or you may come early to fill out the forms before your appointment. Better yet, you can download them and take your time, see below.

This is the pellet supplied in the syringe from Wedgewood Pharmacy.   The pellet lasts about 2 months. Vivitrol is a shot that lasts one month, and there is a pill version that is taken every day.

Not sure if your drinking is a problem? visit Rethinking your Drinking.

1. First, don't "set your heart" on Suboxone!!  Come with an open mind.  There may be options open to you that are better then Suboxone!!

2. Bring all prescription bottles with you, and come with a full bladder for urine testing.

3. Come prepared to stay half a day. Occasionally we do "induction" in the office, where we give the first couple doses supervised in the office.  Usually we just provide you with a prescription to fill and instructions on how to take your first dose at home.

4. It's critical that you are relatively comfortable during your appointment, meaning that you are NOT in too much withdrawal to focus and concentrate on our discussions.  We want to have a very CLEAR discussion about ALL your options.

5. We schedule a large block of Dr. Smith's time for the initial appointment.  Unfortunately, for one reason or another, in the past we've had too many no-shows. For this reason, we require that all financial arrangements be completed before the initial appointment is even scheduled. Thanks for your understanding.
